Compartmentalisation

"Deliberately setting aside a problem or emotion so that you can process it fully at a later date."

Or...

"What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas."

Many people get completely derailed by their emotions, and struggle to perform certain tasks, even when they're essential and can't be skipped. Compartmentalising allows you to not get derailed and make sure that everything gets done, reagardless of how you are actually feeling in the moment.

Classification of Psychological Defenses

The traditional way of categorising psychological defenses is by their maturity level; either primitive, neurotic, or mature. Mature here refers both to their complexity/sophistication, and how helpful/productive they are.

The goal of this glossary is to present and discuss psychological concepts in plain language and in the context of daily experience.
Turning Against the Self

"Instead of expressing disappointment, frustration, and anger outwards, you turn it inwards and punish yourself for your mistakes."

The simplest possible translation for this is “being hard on yourself.” You are the first to criticise yourself, and often stop yourself from doing things because you're worried you'll make a mistake, or that you'll be judged/ridiculed by others.

Denial

Perhaps the most famous defense, denial is literally that: you deny that something is true. This is sometimes trivial, like denying one made an embarassing slip-of-the-tongue, but it can also be more serious, as in the alcoholic who denies their addiction.
